What is metabolic syndrome, and why are children getting it? I would like to thank Dr. Robert H. Lustig, M.D. for providing this great article. Be sure to check out his book "Fat Chance" beating the odds against sugar, processed food, obesity and disease, along with the website www.responsiblefoods.org.  I highly recommended them both.  Be sure to head over to my download page for a free download of this article.

I have been reading this Article by Gary Taubes which came out in 2011 (The New York Times). As a former type 2 diabetic I can attest to sugar being toxic. I'm always happy to share work from one of my favorite authors Mr. Gary Taubes.  Is Sugar Toxic?

Ancel Keys : The Test of Time

This is the reason I eat a high fat diet today. The more you research the more you will see the name Ancel Keys come up. Ancel Keys was the driving force behind the low fat high carbohydrate diet.
By ignoring data from 16 countries, Keys was able to argue that fat caused heart disease. But association or correlation is not causation! As an example, the U.S. had a relatively high fat diet and high rates of heart disease. The Japanese had a very low fat diet and low rates of heart disease. But, after the war, the Japanese also had very low calorie diets, low consumption of sugar and refined food, and a much higher rate of deadly strokes - associations Keys ignored. "Low fat" began on television in 1956 when American Heart Association doctors conducting a fundraiser told a national TV audience to replace traditional American foods - eggs, butter and red meat - with boxed cereal, margarine, vegetable shorting, polyunsaturated corn oil and skinless chicken. Five years later, AHA board member Ancel Keys was famous. He had made the cover of Time (January 13, 1961), and at his urging, the American Heart Association officially adopted his "low fat" high carbohydrate diet. Fellow board member and University of Chicago professor Jeremiah Stamler was a Staunch Keys backer.

This article was brought to my attention and I thought share and point out the fact that the article never mentioned Phytic Acids contained many of the so called healthy grains? Please see links below and share your thoughts in the commotion section. Also for further research check out the books Cereal Killers and Dangerous Grains

MY SOLO FOOD JOURNEY

Turkey, grain free meal.

My solo food journey continues. I read this quote on my way to work this morning. It reminded me how difficult it is to stay focus, not mentioning the totally crazy foods I now enjoy (high fat, animal proteins, plants and vegetables). I would love to have someone walk with me on my food journey will it be you? The most important house you or I will ever live in is not the one we can buy, but the one you are currently living in the one you were born with your body.

EPIGENETIC
"This is about all of us. Gluten is what I call a "silent germ." It inflict lasting damage without your knowing it. Beyond calories, fat, protein, and micro-nutrients, we now understand that food is a powerful epigenetic modulator meaning it can change our DNA for better or worse. Indeed, beyond simply serving as a source of calories, protein, and fat, food actually regulates the expression of many of our genes. And we have only just begun to understand the damaging consequences of wheat consumption from this perspective."

Quotes have been such a big part of my journey. I have used quotes to change my thoughts on disease, foods, and the potential longevity of life. Only when we are able to keep an open mind will we be able to start to make the necessary changes to regain health!

Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life
Harness your body's natural healing powers.

Food journey has forced me to research, take notes, and highlight key sentences and words. Below is a section from Dr. Blaylock's book Health and Nutrition Secrets. Once I read this section, I understood that I simply could not give up. I needed to unlearn what I knew in order to move ahead in my food journey. The spell I was under with modern food was totally amazing. I slowly started to put things together thinking about all possibility, looking at how we went from hunter gatherer to agriculture farming. The understanding of agriculture framing was a very important part of my journey knowing that farming and eating grains would effect the health of the millions of generation to come. I could not believe how the consumption of grains could have played such a big part of my poor health. Once I understood how the grains were effecting me in such a negative way and learning that grains are loaded with anti-nutrients like Phytic acid would help to explain so much.
What About Adults?

One of the great concerns of those who have reached middle age is, have I deteriorated so much that things are hopeless? As a result of this way of thinking, most people will just eat what they enjoy and live out what life they have left. What many of these people do not consider is that they won't just die after they've finished enjoying themselves: the lucky ones may suddenly die of a heart attack or get hit by a car, yet for most of us, that will not happen.

I remember walking through a hospital with a doctor friend of mine, a fellow in his middle years, when he suddenly stopped and peered thoughtfully into a ward full of sickly looking elderly people. I stared with him at the elderly patients scattered about the room, with their emaciated legs wrapped in tangles of stained sheets, mouths open in perfect ovals, sunken eyes staring off into some netherworld, unaware of little but their pain and humiliation.
IV bags could be seen dangling from metal poles and catheters coursed from under the stained sheet, attached to bags of cloudy urine, filling the room with a heavy smell of death. The doctor slowly shook his head back and forth, looked up at me with doleful sadness and said, These are the golden years.

You see, most of us will not be spared the pain and suffering of age. Rather than dying that death we all dream-about going peacefully in our sleep-we will instead undergo a series of health crises, such as multiple heart attacks with years of medication and limitations on our activity, maybe even a loss of employment. Or, we may suffer from a stroke that leaves us paralyzed and unable to speak, dependent on others for the simplest things, such as eating or going to the bathroom.

Frequently, we may suffer from slowly progressing arthritis, undefined aches and pains, unexplained weakness, headaches, deteriorating vision, difficulty concentrating, and a memory that fails us more often than not. Still others will be crippled by diabetes or a neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's dementia. Unfortunately, all of these so-called disease of aging are now occurring in younger people, not just the elderly. We are seeing Parkinson's disease in forty-year-olds and type II diabetes in teenagers.
This will require discipline. It has been said that the undisciplined life is not worth living. We now know that the undisciplined life will also be short and full of misery.
Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D.

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't like, do what you'd rather not.

Dangerous Grains

Way before Wheat Belly and Grain Brain we had Dangerous Grains. I personally do not eat grains (no grain brain here) and I also understand how difficult it can be to avoid them. It is my belief that people should not be consuming grains of any kind. I hope this book can help you understand why.
Dangerous Grains by James Braly, M.D., and Ron Hoggan, M.A.
Early farmers would also appreciate the sense of physical comfort caused by these grains. Paradoxically, they provide this comfort through our inability to fully digest some parts of the grain. Undigested partial proteins, or peptides, found in gluten cereals have morphine-like properties, becoming potent drugs once they enter the bloodstream. Those who are at greatest risk from these foods often experience something akin to addiction due to the pleasant feelings caused by these exorphins, suggesting an origin for the phrase "comfort Foods."
